Avian Influenza H5N1 Information for Dog Owners. We hope this information will reduce the number and severity of bird flu cases in dogs by increasing your knowledge of the disease and thereby helping you become be better prepared to keep your pets safe in these troubled times of Pet Bird Flu, Dog Bird Flu, Pet Avian Flu, Dog Avian Flu, H5N1.

Bird Flu has infected several cats and dogs in Europe and Asia. At the moment dogs seem to be less frequently infected than cats. A few cats have been found carrying the disease that do not appear to be sick, it is unknown whether similar experiences may be found in dogs. Information is rapidly streaming in from many sources around the world as Bird Flu, H5N1 continues to spread. At this moment the disease has not been found in the United States in wild birds, poultry, dogs or cats, but many expect it to occur shortly.

This web site is NOT trying to create a hysteria. Very few dogs and cats have been found infected World Wide and both appear more resistant to the disease than domestic poultry. At this point, the risk to most pets appears low IF proper precautions are taken.

Special Concerns For Hunting Dogs

    Hunting dogs pose special problems, especially those used for retrieving waterfowl, the major carriers of the disease. Similar problem occur for dogs used to hunt upland game (quail, pheasant and similar birds) as upland game birds can carry the disease in infected areas. Quail hunting was recently suspended in Morocco due to the disease. Some people train their pointing dogs on pigeons, these too may cause problems. We are currently writing a major feature on hunting dog issues and situations around the world.

  • Quail May Be Key Link in Spread of Bird Flu. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reports quail carry many strains of Avian Flu but do not show signs of the disease. (If quail play a role in spreading the disease this could impact quail hunting in the U.S. (dogs are used in hunting, quail hunting was recently suspended in Morocco due to Avian Flu concerns).
