Riverwalk businesses relocate after freighter crash

NEW ORLEANS -- The Christmas shopping season was snatched from about 100 Riverwalk merchants and restaurateurs a week ago when the grain ship Bright Field lost power and slammed into the riverfront shopping mall. The mall has been closed since, jeopardizing the future of many businesses at the height of the holiday season. It was unclear Friday how many of the 1,500 people who work at the Riverwalk are unemployed.

Riverwalk's management was expected to announce a possible opening date Monday.

Meanwhile, Bert Mothershead, manager of the Sharper Image, applauded the company's quick move to Canal Place.
